Alnwick will be lit up in festive cheer tomorrow, with the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on ceremony.

The Duchess of Northumberland, assisted by Sally Jobson, a Year 1 pupil at the town’s St Paul’s First School, will do the honours at 7pm.

The event will be held in the Market Place and the tree will be decorated at 6.15pm by schoolchildren.

Other activities include community carol singing and a visit from Father Christmas.

Gordon Castle, chairman of the lights team, said: “Our team of unpaid volunteers has been working since May to refurbish the displays and out in all weathers since October putting everything in place.”

He thanked the public, businesses and organisations for their support and generous donations and added that the group has tried to keep down the cost of amusements.

He added: “I make a plea to motorists to avoid parking in the Market Place from this afternoon and through tomorrow, or they will invite police attention.”
