Three miles of the A1 will be closed overnight from next week while bridge repairs are carried out.
There will be overnight full closure of the stetch of the A1 between Seaton Burn and North Brunton, starting on Monday, February 9.
The carriageway will be closed northbound between 8pm and 6am for two weeks followed by a two-week overnight closure on the southbound carriageway to allow for essential maintenance work to the Stalks Road bridge which will prolong its life and reduce the need for future traffic restrictions.
During the closures, traffic will be diverted via the B1318 and Wideopen. Drivers will exit the A1 at Seaton Burn, take the B1381 and Rotary Way and re-join the A1 at North Brunton. Motorists exiting the A1 at North Brunton will follow the same diversion in reverse.
Highways Agency project manager Steve Bishop said: “This maintenance work is essential to prolong the life of the bridge. We recognise the impact this work will have on road users in the area, particularly as there are major upgrade works on the same road.
“To ensure we minimise the impact of these roadworks, work has been scheduled to take place overnight. We are grateful for motorists’ understanding during the work and ask that they drive carefully and follow the clearly signed diversion routes.”
