THREE people have been taken to hospital following a head-on crash between two cars on a country road north of Alnwick this afternoon.

Police were alerted at 2.25pm following the collision on the old A1 between Heiferlaw Bank and Heckley High House, which involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a Rover.

Two fire engines, from Alnwick and Belford, also attended to assist with helping the 49-year-old driver of the Rover from her vehicle.

She suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

The elderly occupants of the second vehicle were taken to Wansbeck Hospital. They are thought to have suffered minor injuries.

The road is currently closed between Denwick and South Charlton to allow for recovery of the vehicles.

Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 03456 043043.
