More than 11,000 people have backed an online campaign against Banks’ Mining’s plans for opencast operations in Northumberland.

Jacqui White’s Hands Off Druridge Bay petition opposed the application for a surface mine at the Highthorn site.

Jacqui and her husband Dave presented the petition, which included 26 paper signatories, to Northumberland County Council. People opposing the plan fear it would impact on the environment, wildlife and air quality.

Meanwhile, the organisation responsible for licensing coal mining operations across the UK has given its support to proposals.
