A surprise visit from a Northumberland-born actor gave an extra boost to another successful Powburn Show last weekend.

Robson Green, who is currently filming the next series of his ITV series Tales from Northumberland, turned up at Saturday’s event to take part the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling.

The celebrity took on two teenage boys, from the Rothbury Wrestling Club – Harry Bertram, 13, and Joe Hale, 15 – in the ring, while wearing the traditional costume, but was sadly beaten.

Darren Whitfield, coach at the Rothbury club, said: “He was a very good sport and he seemed to enjoy it.

“I think it can only be good for the sport, we had a good crowd and he played them well.

“I think he just wanted to portray the traditional sport.

“He had never done it before but had a brief coaching session beforehand, but it’s very hard to learn in half an hour.”

Elsewhere, the show had a good turnout despite downpours in the morning.

More then 40 hill runners lined up and there were good entries in the industrial and horticultural classes.

Show chairman Suzanne Horn said: “Robson Green definitely added something to the show and it’s good publicity for next year.
