Seahouses and District Rotary club met in the Olde Ship and enjoyed the usual buffet supper after the talk by John Holwell who gave a wonderfully illustrated description of his walk up Kilimanjaro.
He showed great pictures of the terrain, wildlife and the people. Guides and porters led and supported the small party, which included his two sons.
Fortunately, no one suffered too badly from altitude sickness, although there was some discomfort due to the lack of oxygen.
Everyone valiantly attempted to stick to the target of four litres of water a day, despite its awful taste. The triumph of reaching the summit on the rim of the volcano and the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains made the trip well worthwhile.
Many members had enjoyed the annual district conference held at Peebles Hydro.
The visiting group study exchange team of medics from Bulgaria also gave an excellent presentation before their return home. Evenings of good food, musical entertainment and dancing all made for a very enjoyable weekend.
Meetings are held in the ward room of the Olde Ship, Seahouses, at 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings.
