A SWEET treat will be taking centre stage when the Alnwick Food Festival takes place later this year.
Designed by French chef Jean-Christophe Novelli the Alnwick Food Festival crêpe will be on sale from the Êlan Crêperie van which will be visiting the event, which takes place from Friday, September 23 to Sunday, September 25, for the first time this year.
The summer fruit and Alnwick Rum flavoured dessert will be made from local produce – something Êlan prides itself on – while incorporating the French traditions of crêperie.
Managing director and head chef, Peter Reay, said: “One of the key highlights of this year for us is our first appearance at the Alnwick Food Festival.
“We are honoured to be included in the 2011 festival line up and will relish the chance to share our artisan crêperie delights with the Townspeople of Alnwick, and all visitors to the Festival.
“Our aim at Êlan is to bring a gourmet dimension to street food. With a background in operating elite restaurants we wanted to set ourselves the challenge of delivering the highest possible standards and quality of delicious, freshly prepared food on the move.
“The chance to work alongside the acclaimed French celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli at the Festival couldn’t be more fitting. The whole concept of Êlan is borne out of our passion for authentic French crêpes filled with locally sourced, free range and organic produce. We create our menus to excite peoples’ taste buds with both our savoury galettes and sweet crêpes, all served from our vintage Citroën H Van.”
Karen Larkin food festival director said: “It is really exciting to have this unique little van attending this year’s food festival.
“I have seen it in operation and the food it produces is delicious. It is very difficult as the event organiser to have different, tasty items of food on sale that doesn’t clash with traders in the town.
“I am sure the crepes will go down a treat and I would encourage everyone to sample one. Delicious.”
And the Alnwick Food Festival crepe will also be available as part of a special event being held on Friday, September 23 when Jean-Christophe Novelli will also be hosting a Dine in with Novelli night.
The night will give up to 100 people the chance to eat a meal designed by the celebrity in the Northumberland Hall.
And all three courses will be made from produce that is available at food festival.
Tickets for the event cost £50 each which includes a drink on arrival, the meal and two bottles of wine per table and can be bought individually or for tables of 10.
The menu is: Starter - smoked salmon with goat’s cheese and rocket salad. Main - belly pork slow-braised in cider and honey with caramelised onions and potato and celeriac mash. Dessert - the Alnwick Food Festival crepe.
