Swarland Moor Local Heritage Group started this year’s programme with a very interesting talk by Freda Thompson on Richard Grainger and his continuing influence on the architecture of central Newcastle.
She explained his background and the people who influenced him. It was of particular interest when you compared the buildings that were there beforehand and their uses and the uses to which the new buildings were put. Since then, some of these iconic buildings have merely retained their exterior as they originally were – the interiors have been changed out of all recognition.
What became clear was the overall design of Richard Grainger’s buildings and how they gave a certain elegance to that part of the town.
