Plans for a new skatepark in Alnwick are gaining momentum, after support has been voiced for the scheme.
The Alnwick Skatepark Working Group is behind the bid, with the preferred site earmarked for land close to Alnwick Community Centre.
A public meeting was held on Tuesday to discuss the ideas and gauge opinion. Those who attended gave their backing.
Now the committee is looking to get as much support as possible and will aim to kick-start fund-raising activities.
Graham Atkinson, chairman of the working group, said: “Alnwick has long needed a skatepark to meet the needs of the young people.
“We have chosen the preferred site because there is plenty of space and reasonable supervision.
“We will be involving young people in the plans and we are delighted with the levels of support so far.
“We will also get a petition drawn up and the more names we can get on it, then the better.”
Coun Gordon Castle gave his backing to the plan and said he would commit £10,000 from his members’ small schemes budget. He said the next step was for a planning application to be drawn up and submitted.
In the meantime, inquiries will be made to see if the mobile skatepark, which used to go around the county, can be housed somewhere in the town temporarily.
