Store does its fare share to help

AN innovative event at an Alnwick supermarket saw customers give enough food to provide 2,000 meals to people across the UK suffering food poverty.

Sainsbury’s, on Willowburn Avenue, and its charity partner FareShare, teamed up to hold the first food donation drive at the store.

The Alnwick shop was one of more than 600 other Sainsbury’s outlets to take part in the 1 Million Meal Appeal last month.

Lindsay Boswell, chief executive of FareShare, said: “At a time of severe economic hardship, we are seeing unprecedented and increasing demand for food donations, especially during the festive season.

“Donating enough food to provide 2,000 meals is a fantastic gesture from the people of Alnwick

“They have helped us to provide meals for even more of the area’s vulnerable people and we’d like to say thank you for all the help we have received through this food drive with Sainsbury’s.”

The aim of the initiative was to collect enough food to provide a million meals to the 700 UK charities FareShare provides food for on a daily basis.

More than a million meals were donated nationally.
