Store build aim

WORK on a new supermarket in Amble could start next year.

Coun Ian Hinson, a member of Amble Town Council, told the Gazette that he understands that development is set to begin on the Tesco store in spring 2012, with a completion date later that year.

The scheme, a joint venture between the supermarket giant and Northumberland Estates, is for a shop on land next to the Braid and north of Queen Street.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We hope to conclude the final sale of the land soon. Following completion of the sale, we would like to move forward with the new store.” Colin Barnes, development director for Northumberland Estates, said commencement of construction will be for Tesco to decide.
