An Alnwick store’s football team were victorious in a regional football tournament, raising cash for charity in the process.
Team members from Wilkinson, on Lagny Street, raised more than £150 for their chosen charity of the year, the Great North Air Ambulance, after winning the sponsored tournament, which featured seven other North East neighbouring stores.
The grand final, which took place between the Alnwick and Gateshead stores at Gosforth Park in Newcastle, saw Alnwick claim the title with a convincing 4-1 win.
Around 30 friends and family were there, cheering and supporting the team members in their battle to win the title.
Team sponsorship forms and collection buckets were placed in stores throughout the region on the run-up to the day and a total of £1,425 was raised by team members and customers.
Lee Wade, store manager at the Alnwick store, said: “We are extremely proud of the amount of money we have helped to raise for the Great North Air Ambulance.
“It’s a vital service in this area and we were more than happy to support this worthwhile cause.
“There are so many people working for Wilkinson who love a good kick-about so we thought we should use our hobby to do some good for the wider community.”
Mandy Drake, at the Great North Air Ambulance, said: “All the funds raised by Wilkinson will go a long way towards keeping our aircraft flying.
“Through our work, we transport time-critical, injured or ill patients to specialist hospitals and it is the aim of GNAAS to provide the people of the north with the best-quality care available to them.
“We are therefore incredibly grateful to Wilkinson’s team members and customers for their support.”
The other teams taking part in the tournament were from stores in Killingworth, Thornaby, Durham, Cramlington, Northallerton, Driffield and Gateshead.
