A station supervisor from Alnmouth has been recognised for outstanding customer service at Northern Rail’s annual employee recognition awards.

Andy Harmieson, 44, has worked at Alnmouth station for more than six years.

He was named Northern Star – Winner of the Year after judges were blown away by his commitment to going above and beyond for Northern customers.

Andy, who won a £4,000 luxury holiday, said: “What an experience. It was fantastic to be nominated but I’m so surprised to have won.

“Totally speechless. There were so many brilliant nominations, I’m honoured.”

The mother of a young girl, who Andy helped when she left the train at the wrong station, wrote in to applaud his actions, saying: ‘I was completely reassured that she would be safe.

‘I had had visions of having to drive to collect her and her being alone in a strange station.

‘If Andy had not been there, I don’t know what I would have done’.

More than 135 guests attended the Northern Stars event at the Mercure in Manchester last month.

Alex Hynes, managing director for Northern Rail, said: “Whether it’s his attentiveness to detail or safeguarding our customers, Andy is a credit to us all.

“Northern Stars is a celebration of our people and it’s an opportunity to really let individuals shine.

“Every winner sets a fantastic example for others to follow.”
