A big surprise is in store for a courageous tot when he returns from major surgery - as kind-hearted staff from an Alnwick shop will redecorate his bedroom while he is away.

Little Aidan Jackowiak Smith, from Shilbottle, is gearing up for a crucial operation at London’s Great Ormond Street hospital to reduce swelling on his face.

Touched by the two-year-old’s ordeal, representatives from Wilkinson, in Lagny Street, have offered to spruce up his room while he is down in the capital, expected to be in September.

Staff will volunteer their time to deck it out in a Gruffalo theme, including curtains and bed spread.

The store has aquired most of the items – selected by Aidan’s parents Vikki Jackowiak and Karl Smith from a wish-list – while Alnwick and District Round Table has paid for the flooring, to be fitted by Alnwick-based Total Flooring.

Wilkinson stores in Cramlington, Blyth and Ashington have donated £375 through the company’s Helping Hands fund, which will go towards purchasing sensory lighting for the room.

Staff from these branches will join in with the decorating.
