Colourful blooms and culinary treats were the order of the day at the ninth Alnwick Spring Show, which has been declared a triumph by organisers.

The annual event was staged at the town’s Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday and yielded a feast of exhibits.

An array of daffodils, tulips, floral arrangements, baking and crafts were entered on the day, with some competitors coming from as far as Oxford and Edinburgh.

There were also an encouraging number of entries from children.

Reflecting on the show, chairman David Parker said: “It went well, you couldn’t fault it. The number of entries and the quality was good.”

The tulip and daffodil classes were particularly impressive, while David described the number of entries in the floral art as exceptional.

Experienced judges Philida Irving, Rae Beckwith, Marion Dickinson, Margaret Onions and Keith Eyre cast their eye over the exhibits, while Lord Howick presented the prizes.

Members of Alnwick’s Pottergate Pantry attended the event to offer café-style refreshments. There was also a plant stall and local crafts, while a number of locally-based organisations had stands.

With the ninth show done and dusted, all eyes are being turned to next year’s offering. David said: “We are hoping to do something a bit special for 2016, which will be our 10th show, and any ideas would be welcome.”

He added: “The committee is grateful for the sponsorship and support received from numerous local firms and individuals.”
