Plans to build 17 apartments, three food outlets and office space in Amble have been backed by the town council, but members do have concerns.

The group says that it strongly supports the scheme – for The Boatyard, Coquet Street – describing it as an enhancing development.

But concerns include increased risk of traffic problems in the area. Members also feel that the planning gain needs to be stronger.

The applicant has proposed provision of space for a coastal footpath occupying in the region of 240m2 of boatyard storage space.

Based on current rates and providing 100 per cent occupancy, this equates to an annual loss of revenue of £14,400 per year.

Those behind the bid say this contribution over a proposed 15-year lease equates to £216,000 and therefore suitable planning gain.

Members support the idea but say the lease length is inadequate and there is no certainty of 100 per cent occupancy.
