A SOCIAL group for elderly people in Coquetdale was officially opened last week.

The Duchess of Northumberland visited members of Coquetdale WRVS group at Rothbury Community Hospital which has been running in the village since the middle of March.

It was set up by Roz Tinlin, manager for Northumberland for the WRVS, to help socially-isolated people living in the Coquet Valley.

The group runs every Tuesday at the hospital, using space which would otherwise be empty and gives people, who don’t normally get the chance to get out, the opportunity to socialise and interact with other members of the community.

And it has been a huge success so far.

Elderly people from across the valley now take part, with a transport scheme in operation for those who are unable to get there by themselves.

The Duchess was met by smiles from those who attend the group.

It runs from 10am to 3pm and costs £5, which includes tea, coffee, biscuits and lunch.
