It raised £3,420 for the teenage cancer ward at Newcastle’s RVI, where he was treated.

Nathan, who was 18 when he died, played for the town’s rugby club, in the U15 and Colts teams, as well as Duchess’s Community High School.

His dad Nigel said: “I would like to thank his friends who organised the match, in particular Erin Smith, Joe Phillips, Rory Straker and Alex Stevenson – and everyone who came along to support the event. A special mention to Callum Alliston, who shook a collection bucket all night!”

The final score was Duchess’s School XV 21 Alnwick Colts XV 15.
