Northumberland was crowned the second best region to visit in the country at a prestigious travel awards ceremony last night.

At the British Travel Awards (BTA) in London, the county won the silver award in the Best UK Holiday County/ Destination category, sandwiched between the south-west duo of Cornwall in first and Devon in third.

British Travel Awards’ chief executive, Lorraine Barnes Burton, said: “It was another record-breaking year for British Travel Awards’ consumer voting, with more than one-and-a-quarter million votes cast to determine the winners of the 143 awards – no other awards programme in the UK comes near this staggering amount.

“All BTA winners are to be congratulated for getting the most votes in their categories, no mean feat as the voting public has become increasingly discerning and expects the best customer service.”
