An Amble-based company is encouraging fishermen to take refresher safety training for free.
To ensure experienced fishermen have up-to-date safety knowledge and skills, Anglo Scottish Seafish Training Association (ASSTA) is calling on those who completed their mandatory safety training more than three years ago to attend newly-updated courses.
These include seafish sea survival, fire-fighting, first aid and safety awareness.
Thanks to funding from the Department for Transport, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the European Fisheries Fund, Seafarers UK, Trinity House and the Scottish Fishermen’s Trust, ASSTA is currently able to provide training places throughout the UK until September 30.
ASSTA is coordinating this training, covering Berwick, Seahouses, Beadnell, Amble and Blyth, along with ports all the way down to Hartlepool and from Whitehaven down to Liverpool.
Dennis Osborne, of ASSTA, said: “Safety is so important to our local fisherman as they are part of the most dangerous agency in the UK.
“Fisherman should take full advantage of this offer while it is free.”
