Around 5,000 people flocked to the Alwinton Border Shepherds’ Show on Saturday to bring the 2015 north Northumberland country show season to an end.

This year’s show – the 149th of its kind – featured an action-packed programme of events and crowds poured through the gates, on what was a fine and warm October day.

Show-goers were treated to a host of entertainment, including terrier racing, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, dog shows and fair-ground rides, as well as the Gallery of Wonders, which is an intriguing hybrid of art gallery and touring peep show.

The craft and exhibit tents boasted a large number of high-quality entries, from artwork and photographs to cakes, vegetables and walking sticks, while a range of trade stands also proved popular.

The fell race was sponsored by Gosforth-based Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care Charity.

One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of a baldric – a belt worn over one shoulder that is typically used to carry an object like a drum – to Rothbury Highland Pipe Band’s chairman and Drum Major David Brown, to mark the 60th anniversary of the group re-forming.

The baldric, which is embroidered with pipe-band events over the years, was presented by Hazel and Tom Mason, and Jean and Angus Foreman. The band played at their weddings in the 1960s.

A fund-raising effort by the community helped purchase the baldric, as well as a Drum Major’s mace which was presented earlier in the year, and the remaining funds have gone towards helping young band members.

The group performed a number of rousing tunes during the show.

Meanwhile, Hans Pörksen, National Farmers’ Union Northumberland chairman, presented long-service awards to Martin Bertram and David Rutherford, who have worked at Bygate Hall Farm, in the Coquet Valley, for 50 years. The accolade honoured their contribution to the farming community of the Coquet Valley.

Alwinton Show secretary Bessie Rogerson said: “It was another successful show and people were saying how much they enjoyed it.

“We had a new layout this year on the show field and it worked really well and we had a splendid display of crafts and exhibits.

“I would like to thank everyone who came to the show and we hope to see everyone for our 150th show next year on October 8.”
