The year began with business meetings looking forward to possibilities for the future of Seahouses and District Rotatry Club.
Our first speaker was our newest member who gave an insight to his life, leading to him joining Seahouses and District Rotary Club. This was followed by a celebration of Burns Night with poems read by various club members and an excellent haggis supper.
The speaker at our latest meeting was John Holwell, who gave an informative talk about the progress of our railways.
We were told that since the privatisation of the railways in 1994 there has been a 60 per cent increase in passenger journeys. The rise in business travel accounts for some of this, with road congestion, fuel costs, parking problems and the availability of WiFi on trains all contributing to rail being a choice for many.
The punctuality of trains is also far better than we are led to believe with 91 per cent of journeys being within target times.
There is also an increase in freight transportation and with faster trains all looks good for the future of our railways.
The next meeting of Seahouses and District Rotary Club will be held at the Olde Ship, Seahouses, on Tuesday at 7.30pm.
