PUPILS at an Alnwick school have been buzzing with excitement after creating an insect hotel as part of their pond area.

The children, from Alnwick South First School’s eco group, are also hoping to expand the scheme to create new features including a butterfly garden, bee border and tree planting, after gaining a £9,000 grant from Awards for All.

Headteacher Jenny Smith said: “The children have been working with the Alnwick Garden, Groundworks and one of our parents, Katherine Williams, who is an ecologist, to create the insect hotel next to our revamped pond, as part of a project called Get Alnwick Buzzing.

“Eventually they hope to add further features, including a bee border, where bee-friendly plants will be used.

“The aim is to then collect the seeds and give them out in the community to encourage further habitats for bees.”
