WITH the backing of the Rotary Club of Alnwick, a group of pupils from the Alnwick South First School and the two middle schools, Duke’s and Lindisfarne, have formed a Rotakids Club.

This is the first Rotakids club in the North Eastern District and one of the first in the UK.

At the initial meeting just before Christmas, the Rotakids committee decided to appeal for soft toys and spectacles to be packed into Aquaboxes (which contain basic necessities and water purification equipment) for use in areas stricken by natural disasters.

At the second meeting in January, they celebrated the generosity of their school friends by bringing 16 large black plastic bin liners full of cuddly toys.

This proved to be too many for the Aquabox charity to manage, so many were delivered to the Northumberland hospice movement where they were received with great enthusiasm and gratitude.

In addition, the committee members received new black T-shirts with the Rotakids logo on the front and the Sainsbury’s logo on the sleeves in recognition of the generous sponsorship by the local retail outlet.

They are pictured wearing their new shirts outside the Duke’s School with some of the soft toys they collected.

The Rotakids will next be learning about food and nutrition with Sainsbury’s, and tackling a Swimarathon in aid of End Polio Now at Willowburn.

If you are interested in being part of the Rotary International organisation, the Rotary Club of Alnwick meets every Thursday lunchtime in the White Swan Hotel, or call the secretary on 01665 604375.
