It’s show time

Roddam WI held its September meeting in the Cheviot Centre, Wooler, when the president Mrs J Laycock welcomed everyone. The minutes of the previous meeting were read, agreed and signed.

The afternoon of crazy bowls at the home of Mrs B Ede, Doddington WI president, had been greatly enjoyed, with Roddam winning.

Rose bushes were presented and Roddam has permission to plant one outside the Cheviot Centre so it will be in full view for everyone.

A letter of thanks had been received from the Glendale Festival Committee for providing teas for the festival, which had been a great success.

Transport arrangements were made for a visit to Eglingham WI and county notices were given.

It was the final call for the purchase of national raffle tickets, the annual subscription was to go up by £1.50, and members were encouraged to contact their MP regarding the ‘Care not Custody’ debate.

We had done well at Wooler Show with two first prizes.

The speaker for the evening was Mrs M Brown. Her eye-opening talk on the first 101 years of Wooler Show was greatly enjoyed. A vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs M Atkinson.

The competition for four pieces of tray bake was: 1 Mrs C Cumming; 2 Mrs M Nelson; 3 Mrs M Matthewson.

Next month’s speaker will be Brian Burnie on From war baby to Daft as a Brush.

A bouquet and card were presented to Mr and Mrs Morton on their forthcoming diamond wedding.

The evening closed with supper and the raffle.
