Parking areas to the north of Seahouses, which are used by visitors to access the beach and St Aidan’s dunes, long the source of complaints, are set to be repaired.

A Northumberland County Council spokesman said: “The county council is very much aware of the condition of the highway verge between Seahouses and Bamburgh.

“These are not, and never have been, official lay-bys, but the damage has been caused by their use for informal parking over a period of time.

“However, with a view towards encouraging ongoing tourism in the area, it is proposed to make some much-needed repairs ahead of the 2017 summer season.”
