A north Northumberland community fire station is hosting a family fun day and recruitment event this weekend.

The open day at Wooler, on Saturday from 10.30am to 1pm, will include a charity fund-raiser and a host of fun activities for families to enjoy.

It will also give people the opportunity to chat to fire crews about the role of a retained firefighter, explore a fire engine up close and even try out some equipment.

Activities will include a young firefighters’ ladder demonstration, a hose running challenge, a static cycle challenge, face-painting, a toy corner, a raffle and tombola, as well as food and drink.

The fire service will also use the event to launch a dynamic new recruitment video in the career advice zone, which includes drone footage of volunteers responding to emergencies.

Mark McCarty, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said: “We are always keen to meet local people who might have what it takes to become an on-call firefighter in Northumberland. It doesn’t matter how old you are, whether you are male or female, or what you do for a living, the thing that matters is that you are committed and ready when called upon.

“The role is many things – challenging, rewarding and even exhilarating at times – and it gives the volunteer a sense of duty and of purpose that most people don’t get to experience in their daily lives.

“We are always looking for volunteers around the county when local stations require personnel, that includes the stations in the north of the county. This event is your chance to find out more about the role and to make an informed decision by chatting to other volunteers about the benefits to you and your community.”
