A major recruitment drive for around 100 members of staff at two town developments is underway, while the launch of a £450,000 village store has created further jobs.

Aldi and McDonald’s are encouraging people to apply to work in their new Alnwick premises, which are both due to open later this year.

Meanwhile, a new Co-operative shop at the former Burnside pub, in Longhoughton, has created eight jobs and will welcome customers for the first time today.

The new McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant, to be sited next to the petrol station at Cawledge, is scheduled to open on Wednesday, September 23.

It will create at least 80 jobs and the fast-food giant is currently on the look-out for full and part-time staff.

A company spokesman said: “We are excited about opening our new restaurant and developing a long and positive relationship with the local community and its residents.

“If anyone is interested in applying for a job at our new restaurant, we’d love to hear from you.”

Aldi, which is located on South Road, is also due to open in September and is recruiting nearly 20 members of staff.

There is one deputy store manager (30-hour variable contract) role available, as well as positions for 10 store assistants (25-hour variable contract) and eight stock assistants (20-hour variable contract).

Steve Barnett, Aldi regional managing director, said: “Northumberland is a key area of growth for us and our new store in Alnwick is opening very soon.”

The Co-operative shop in Longhoughton is being officially opened by pupils from Longhoughton C of E Primary School at 10am today and there will be offers and promotions in and around the store.

The shop is pioneering a new role, known as a Community Pioneer, where a member of the food store team, Ashleigh Foy, will work to foster involvement in community activities, from fund-raising initiatives to helping to understand and develop solutions to meet community needs.

Darren Park, manager of the new store said: “We are thrilled to have made such a significant investment in Longhoughton and delighted that we have a fantastic new food store with which to serve the community – it is an exciting time for the whole team. The store will be a hub for the local community.”
