Students at Rothbury and Seahouses Middle Schools were delighted to welcome award-winning children’s author Jonathan Meres to talk about his series of books, The World of Norm.

Jonathan said he had fantastic events at all the schools he attended and Seahouses Middle really impressed with their posters which were hung around the hall. “The events were extremely successful in both schools and we had children and teachers laughing at the antics of poor Norm.”

The children at Seahouses created their own posters of Jonathan’s life in preparation for his visit. Scottish-based author Jonathan is a former stand-up comedian turned novelist, so it’s no surprise his books about the hapless Norm – the boy who can’t understand why everything always seems unfair- are fantastically funny and have been described as reminiscent of Wimpy Kid.

Other books in the series include May Contain Nuts, May Cause Irritation, May Produce Gas, May Require Batteries, the former being shortlisted for the Red House Children’s Book Award 2013 and winning both the Scottish Children’s Book Award and the Phoenix Children’s Book Award.

Jonathan came to visit as part of the Hexham Book Festival and the tour included Rothbury Middle School, Seahouses Middle School and Tweedmouth Middle School.

Jonathan’s books have been reviewed professional as being able to capture ‘the feelings and motivations of adolescent boys superbly. Norm is completely believable and almost annoyingly life-like. At times you feel almost as frustrated as Norm’s Mum and Dad as he once again expresses an amazing brand of teenage selfishness or stupidity’.
