Work has started on the new unit at the retail park to the south of Alnwick, which is set to house a national retailer of pet supplies.

Earlier this year, Northumberland Estates applied to Northumberland County Council for a new retail unit at Willowburn, which will be let to Pets at Home.

The scheme, located between the back of the Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre and the Sainsbury’s car park, with Alnwick Cemetery to the north, was approved in June.

The new store will have a retail floorspace of more than 6,000 sq ft and a mezzanine level of more than 3,000 sq ft, which would be used for veterinary and dog-grooming services.

The development includes 32 car-parking spaces and Pets at Home will employ 16 full-time and seven part-time staff.
