Kind-hearted staff at HMP Northumberland put on their Christmas jumpers and helped raise more than £400 for charity.

Colleagues at the Acklington-based prison got into the festive spirit as part of the Text Santa initiative – set up by ITV to support UK-based good causes during the Christmas period.

HMP Northumberland staff raised a total of £424.25 and the cash will go to Macmillan Cancer Support, Make-A-Wish UK and Save The Children.

Administrator Lorna Stewart-Hook, who coordinated the prion’s efforts, said: “I did a collection and asked staff for donations of £2 or whatever they wished to contribute and they then wore their Christmas jumpers.

“It was a great motivator for staff and prisoner relations and the support was fantastic. It spread a lot of festive cheer throughout the establishment.

“I did a collection at the gate from 7am, then myself and my colleague Sarah went onto every wing and did a tour of the establishment with our collection buckets with many a ho ho ho to be heard throughout the prison.”
