Will Booth, elections manager at Northumberland County Council, said: “We are aware of a printing error on the parish election ballot paper that has been included in a small number of postal vote packs. The issue has been caused by a procedural error made by a third-party print contractor and affects a total of 479 voters – less than one per cent of the 54,000 postal voting packs which have been sent out.

“In the packs affected, the wrong ballot paper was printed for the parish election. In order to give these voters the opportunity to vote in the parish election, it is necessary for the original packs they have received to be cancelled and a replacement issued. Anyone who has already completed and returned the original pack has been asked to complete and return the new pack.

“While the problem was with the parish ballot paper, it is also necessary to cancel and reissue the county ballot paper in the affected areas.

“The names and addresses of all individuals affected are known and a letter has been sent out to them explaining the situation and telling them what to expect and how to respond.”

Mr Booth apologised for the problem, adding that the response was carried out in consultation with the Electoral Commission. The council’s elections team can be contacted on 01670 624811.
