Post-office services came to an end in Longhoughton yesterday – at least in the short term – while the village’s Spar shop will close on Saturday.
The post office was located inside the Spar and the closure comes after the Spar’s parent company ISS decided it was no longer viable. The building is owned by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and leased to ISS and hairdressers Haircrew, which will remain.
Longhoughton’s Co-op store is investigating the possibility of taking on the Post Office, but nothing has been confirmed. Even if this does go through, it is anticipated that the village will be without a facility until the autumn.
The parish council has agreed to pay for the cost of a seven-seater bus for a month’s trial. The service would take vulnerable residents to Lesbury Post Office once a week.
If it is well used, the bus could be kept on until post-office services return to Longhoughton. Parish councillors have stressed that the bus is not a freebie for all villagers, rather a service for those who genuinely need it most.
