POLICE have played down ‘scaremongering’ which spread through a north Northumberland village after a teenager was assaulted.
The 16-year-old was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital after sustaining a minor head injury in the incident, which happened in Druridge Avenue, Hadston, at around 8pm on Sunday.
A 15-year-old was subsequently arrested and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The incident sparked rumours around the village, but at a meeting of East Chevington Parish Council on Monday, PC Paul Dent told members that there was no need to panic, amid the speculation.
He said: “Last night, there was an incident which caused some impact in the community today.
“There have been a lot of rumours and scaremongering. There was a report. That has been dealt with by police. There is no cause for concern, despite what people have been saying.”
Anyone with any information about the incident can call police on 03456 043043.
