Police investigating a fatal collision on the A1 in Northumberland are re-appealing for witnesses.

At around 3.50pm on Wednesday, December 9, police were called to a report of a collision between a HGV and a digger near the Shilbottle exit on the southbound carriageway, just south of Alnwick. Emergency services attended and the driver of the JCB, Stephen Alan Clarehugh, aged 54, of Bockenfield Cottages, Bockenfield, Felton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the HGV was uninjured.

Motor Patrols Sergeant Jason Ryder said: "Inquiries into the collision are underway and we urge anyone who may have information that could help to contact us. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the JCB digger travelling southbound on the A1 at the time of or shortly before the collision and would ask anyone who was in the area to get in touch as they may have vital information that could help. We have dedicated officers working with the family of Mr Clarehugh to provide them with support and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time."

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, should contact police on 101 quoting reference 698 08/12/15.
