Gazette photographer Jane Coltman captured the Ratcheugh Observatory, near Longhoughton, in a lovely evening light.

The curious construction sits upon Ratcheugh Crag and was commissioned by the 1st Duke of Northumberland. It was designed by Robert Adam and built by John Bell of Durham. It was probably built around 1770-80.

The first floor offers spectacular views of the coast and surrounding countryside.
