The operation of new lifts at Alnmouth Station has been delayed, after the installation of vital phone lines has stalled.
The Gazette has been told that work needs to finished on providing additional phone lines which are essential for emergency calls.
It is hoped that a short-term solution can be put in place as soon as possible.
A Northern Rail spokeswoman said: “We would like to apologise to all passengers inconvenienced by the delay in the operation of the new lifts at Alnmouth Station.
“The issue relates to the provision of additional phone lines which are essential for the emergency call facility and lift usage monitoring.
“We are currently awaiting confirmation from BT as to when this work can be completed, however we have been informed by Network Rail that a short-term solution will be in place soon.
“Our passengers are our priority and unfortunately we cannot allow the lifts to be used until every provision has been made for their safety.”
A Network Rail spokeswoman confirmed that they were waiting for the order to be fulfilled and added that the company was working with Northern Rail to see if an interim measure can be put in place to get the lifts usable.
Ward member for Lesbury, Coun Roger Styring, said he was frustrated by the delay and hoped the lifts would be in operation as soon as possible.
