A pensioner has been killed after a two-car collision on the outskirts of Alnwick last night.

The 82-year-old man, who has been described as local by police, was pronounced dead at the scene. His details have not yet been released.

His Rover was involved in a collision with a VW Passat close to West Land Cottages on the B6341 Alnwick Moor road at around 7.20pm. The pensioner was going towards Rothbury while the driver of the VW Passat, a 31-year-old man, was travelling in the other direction.

The Passat driver, also said to be local by police, was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital suffering minor injuries.

Police, ambulance and fire and rescue crews were all in attendance and part of the road was closed for around five-and-a-half hours to allow for collision investigation to take place.

Police are appealing to anyone who saw the crash or was on the road at the time to contact them on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference number 1010 17/2/15.
