PAVEMENTS: Improvements long overdue

Mr Turnbull is correct about Alnwick’s pavements (Northumberland Gazette, September 7).

The town’s pavements are a disgrace.

In the red book, A Descriptive And Historical View Of Alnwick by William Davison, published in 1822, pages 122 and 123 describe the condition of the town pavements and contain the words “yet it is still a subject of regret, that so much remains to be done for the accommodation of foot passengers”.

After some 200 years our town’s improvements must be getting near.
