Park for free in the run-up to Christmas

Parking will be free in all Northumberland County Council-managed on-street parking places and off-street car parks in the run-up to Christmas.

The authority has announced this initiative which runs from Monday, December 16 to Thursday, December 26.

Coun Ian Swithenbank, policy board member for streetcare and environment, said: “We hope that this will help to support local businesses and boost trade during the run-up to Christmas.”

Traffic congestion will continue to be regulated by continued enforcement of the existing time restrictions to ensure turnover of short-stay parking spaces.

l From April next year, parking across Alnwick will be free for a 12-month trial. It comes after the county’s Labour administration offered the chance for towns and parishes to decide if they want free parking by developing their own plans.
