REGENERATION: Remember the locals

I have been a resident of Amble since born, and whilst I have no objection to change, I, like many residents of Amble, am sick and tired of the way the Amble harbour regeneration is being organised.

I think it is ripping the heart out of our community.

We are told that the increase in tourism due to the regeneration of the harbour area will benefit the community. In what respect, I ask?

Job creation? I don’t think so. The imminent closure of the Boat Yard suggest job losses are more like it.

Too much attention is being paid to the Harbour Village that there is a fear that Queen Street is being neglected.

And we won High Street of the Year? The street is a disgrace.

Just a quick reminder for all of the commissions and trusts in Amble, when the tourists have gone and the winter nights draw in, just remember whose cash it is that keeps the traders in Amble trading.

One more thing, I have heard Amble being referred to as ‘grey’, ‘grimy’ and ‘a 19th century town’ – comments made by outsiders of course.

You’re always free to leave if you don’t like the place.
