Only the brave take a New Year plunge in the North Sea

Hardy souls are preparing to take the plunge tomorrow in New Year’s Day dips on the north Northumberland coast.

An array of fancy dress is expected at two events organised to raise money for good causes.

The first swim takes place at Little Shore in Amble, with those taking part meeting at 10.30am and going into the water at 11am.

It will raise money for Bright Red, a charity which supports the Newcastle Freeman Hospital ward that helped grandmother Susan Wintrip, 57, from Amble, overcome cancer. Her best friend, Kath Elliott, 55, has organised the splash in the North Sea.

An hour later, the Alnmouth beach New Year’s Day dip is being resurrected after an absence of several years. It is set to raise money for any charity that participants want to support – or simply as a dare.

The event is being sponsored by Puffin Stores/Alnmouth Post Office, which will provide hot food for participants afterwards.

To catch the high tide, the event will take place at noon. Participants are asked to contact Alnmouth Post Office beforehand to register their interest.
