When the chips are down, there’s one place to go – Neptune Fish Restaurant in Seahouses.

The popular takeaway and restaurant has been named the Northumberland Gazette’s Chip Shop of the Year.

We asked readers to nominate their top shop and then, from a shortlist of five, to vote for their favourite chippy.

On the shortlist were Neptune Fish Restaurant, Seahouses; Harbour Fish Bar, Broomhill Street, Amble; The John Dory, West Street, Belford; Lewis’s Fish Restaurant, Main Street, Seahouses; and Carlo’s, Market Street, Alnwick.

But it was Neptune which proved to be batter than the rest.

The competition was launched during National Chip Week in February when we invited readers to tell us about their favourite chip shop.

There are lots of reasons people love chip shops.

It could be the delicious, crispy batter and the locally-caught fish.

Or maybe it’s the quality of potatoes and the fact that when they’re made into chips, they’re kept fresh and cooked to order.

It could even be the friendly banter with the staff.

Find out just what makes the Neptune Fish Restaurant a hit with readers in next week’s Gazette.
