A pensioner has been given a two-year restraining order and a police caution after assaulting his wife.

Edward Jefferson Brown, 81, had originally pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault by beating.

The incident dated back to July 2, and Brown, of Bellavista, Blaeberry Hill, Rothbury, was due to stand trial at Bedlington magistrates’ court on Tuesday, November 10.

However, prior to the hearing, Brown admitted the charge against Jean Brown. He was subsequently cautioned and received the restraining order. The prosecution offered no evidence and the assault charge was dismissed.

The court heard that Brown had no previous convictions or cautions and that divorce proceedings between him and his wife were ongoing.

Defending Brown, John Monkhouse said his client had not been represented at the police station, following the allegation, and the matter ‘should not have come close to going to court’.
