POLICE have named an elderly man killed in a collision on the A1 in Northumberland on Friday, December 30.
At 1.10pm on Friday, December 30, there was a two car collision on the A1, northbound, near to the Swarland junction.
The vehicles involved were a Ford Fiesta, being driven by an 80-year-old man, and a Citroen Berlingo van.
Police believe that at the time of the crash the Fiesta was travelling away from the junction and the Berlingo was travelling north when they collided.
Police, fire and ambulance services attended and the 80-year-old man, who police can now identify as Eric Smith, 80, from Simonside Avenue in Choppington, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A passenger in the Fiesta suffered minor injuries as did the driver of the Berlingo.
The road was closed for around four hours to allow for the vehicles to be recovered and collision investigation to take place.
Inquiries into the collision are ongoing and police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
