President Mrs P Minto opened the September meeting of North Sunderland and Seahouses WI, welcoming all 19 members plus five visitors on such a warm, pleasant evening.
Secretary Mrs S Macfarlane read the minutes of the previous meeting in July. These were accepted.
Treasurer Mrs Phillips gave her report of our finances plus the result of the afternoon strawberry tea held in August. This was very satisfactory, plenty of visitors and sunshine.
Plans were made for the Group Meeting. Our next pub lunch will be on September 28, at the Lindisfarne Inn, Beal.
Future dates include Down Your Way – Flodden 500 on October 7; various events at Cresswell House; a gardening event at Heighley Gate, September 26; International Day, November 4; Geordie Music Hall at Seaton Delaval (pies, peas & posh puds), November 21; Christmas Crafts at Newbrough, November 9.
Mrs L Harratt, from Embleton, was then introduced. She is a professional flower arranger and gave us a very interesting demonstration featuring a harvest table decoration.
This lady was up at the crack of dawn and had been down to the wholesale market.
She had done a lot of preparation and gave us all a saucer-shaped container with pre-soaked oasis – all ready for us to start our own personal arrangement.
She also brought along a very large selection of greenery and flowers.
We had been asked to take along a pair of scissors and/or secateurs so very soon the room was quiet except for the snip, snip, snipping of twigs and stalks.
We were all absolutely engrossed.
We were not quite up to the standard of Mrs Harratt – although some of us had made a very good effort and proudly carried our trophies home.
The competition, a vase, was won by Mrs P Cole, Mrs May Craig and Mrs S MacFarlane.
Mrs Minto gave the vote of thanks for what was an interesting and enjoyable evening.
Our next meeting on October 1 will feature Guide Dogs, a talk given by David Corbyn.
