North Sea dip to blow away the cobwebs

After an absence of several years, a New Year’s Day swim is being organised again this year at Alnmouth Beach.

Organiser Nick Mattlock said: “The idea is to raise money for any charity that participants want to support, or to clear any remaining New Year’s Eve hangovers – or simply as a dare.

“A group of us jumped in the sea last New Year’s Day, so this year we thought it would be good to organise something properly and see if we can emulate the events that take place down the coast at places like Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.”

The event is being sponsored by Puffin Stores/Alnmouth Post Office, which will provide hot food for participants afterwards.

To catch the high tide, the event will take place at noon and Alnmouth Parish Council has kindly agreed to the use of the boathouses by the beach car park as a base for the event.

Anyone who wishes to participate is asked to contact Alnmouth Post Office beforehand to register their interest.

Another New Year’s Day dip is being held further down the coast at Amble.
