A renowned Northumberland chef is cooking up a new culinary adventure for himself, by opening a restaurant in a seaside village.

Richard Sim, from Shilbottle, has launched The Potted Lobster, in Bamburgh, which began serving customers towards the end of last year.

The eatery, which is located on Lucker Road and caters for 30 covers, places locally-sourced produce at the heart of its menu.

And for Richard – who has previously worked at the likes of The Alnwick Garden and The Baltic in Gateshead, as well as helping to open The Old Boat House in Amble with fellow chef Martin Charlton – the new venture represents a change in direction for the experienced chef.

The 47-year-old said: “It is just me and my cooking. It is nice to be back and doing the cooking, rather than doing the management thing.

“I was going to concentrate on doing the private stuff, but I got bored and I wanted to get back into the restaurant game.

“I decided to do it myself, so I have gone full circle really – now I am a one-man band, just like I was when I first started 20 years ago. I am really excited about The Potted Lobster and it is going well so far.

“The menu will be seasonal based and we will be using whatever is about. We are using beautiful Northumberland lamb and there is a lot of game at this time of year, but in the summer, when the fish stocks are a bit more, we will make the menu more fishy.”

A part-time chef is assisting Richard, while there is also the front of house team and manager Kate Handyside. Richard indicated that further staff may be recruited in the summer season.

The restaurant has already gained five-star reviews on TripAdvisor and its own Facebook page. Among the praise on TripAdivsor, one post reads: ‘It’s not all about the fish, although the potted lobster and crab was one of the most divine starters I have ever tasted. I went off-piste and had the melt-in-the-mouth twice-cooked lamb. Unbelievable flavours, food and two wonderful waitresses all set in comfortable surroundings.’

On Facebook, reviewer Tracey Trixie Blenkin states: “What a great place to eat. The food was amazing, the service impeccable. Quick service, great atmosphere. Will definitely be back soon. 5* all the way.”
