A hotel which received ‘eye-wateringly’ bad reviews is on the up again thanks to its new owners and staff.

Clennell Hall Country House near Alwinton has been given a new lease of life thanks to its new owner John ‘Rocky’ Ramshaw.

He took over the business with his wife around a year ago, and with the help of former colleague Ian Glendinning who is now manager at the hotel, it has been rejuvenated.

It has been redecorated from top to bottom, rooms refurbished, a restaurant put in, the reception area redone and local people taken on as employees.

And it is one of the first places in the Coquet Valley to have an interactive television system.

Mr Glendinning, a former police officer, said: “It was really bad.

“It is very unfortunate but it had a dismal reputation.

“The Tripadvisor reviews were eye-wateringly bad and we have now built that back up to a degree where since we took it on we have had 100 per cent good reviews.

“We have had a lot of return guests and the momentum is slowly getting there.

“We had a big folk festival last weekend which we revived and was sold out.

“We struggled in the winter but so far this year, we haven’t and it has been good.

“We have employed a full-time chef and we are using local suppliers.

“Most of our meat comes from Rothbury Family Butchers.

“We have got a long way to go but we are on plan, we are excited about it and seem to be doing well.”

Ian was asked by Rocky to help out with the business.

Ian added: “We’re making a pretty good partnership.”

Clennell Hall is also licensed to carry out weddings and holds functions and can hold numerous different events.
