A new director is to take over at the helm of HMP Northumberland as its current leader takes on a new role at one of the country’s biggest prisons.
Matt Spencer, the current director at HMP Northumberland, has been appointed director of HMP Forest Bank in Salford, a 1,400-place category B male prison run by Sodexo Justice Services.
Matt joined Sodexo in December 2013 and has been the governor and then director of HMP Northumberland for more than three years. In that time, Matt successfully combined HMPs Acklington and Castington into what is now HMP Northumberland.
And since December 2013 he transitioned the prison from the public sector to Sodexo Justice Services.
Tony Simpson, deputy director of maximum security male prison HMP Addiewell in Scotland, will become the new director of 1,348-place HMP Northumberland. Tony has worked for Sodexo Justice Services for more than seven years, having joined from the Scottish Prison Service where he was a governing governor. He was mobilisation director when HMP Northumberland transferred to Sodexo Justice Services.
The existing director of HMP Forest Bank Trevor Shortt will join the Sodexo Justice Services executive team in the new role of director of operations – community. He will take responsibility for the six community rehabilitation companies (CRCs) to be run by Sodexo Justice Services under the Ministry of Justice Transforming Rehabilitation programme, which includes Northumbria CRC.
Tony Leech, managing director of Sodexo Justice Services, said, “Matt Spencer has been an excellent addition to Sodexo since he joined us with HMP Northumberland in December 2013. He has overseen a successful transition for the prison from the public sector to Sodexo Justice Services and made great strides towards our goal of turning it into a working prison, providing more meaningful activity for prisoners. I’m sure he will bring continued success to HMP Forest Bank, one of the biggest and best-run prisons in the country.
“Tony Simpson was instrumental in mobilising HMP Northumberland as a Sodexo Justice Services prison and brings a huge amount of experience from his time at HMP Addiewell, a maximum security establishment.
“We welcome Trevor Shortt to the Sodexo Justice Service executive team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Trevor for leading HMP Forest Bank to great success, including level 4 in the prison rating system, one of the highest security audit scores outside of the high security estate.
“We are entering an exciting and busy period in the history of Sodexo Justice Services. These moves will ensure that we have the right people in the right places to meet the emerging challenges and to deliver success.”
